Visual &Performing Arts

Choir, band & orchestra
Our performing arts program begins with elementary school music classes encouraging children to explore music as essential to being human. Exploration of voice, rhythm, movement, and instruments generates excitement for the range of music we make. Middle and high school choir, band, and orchestra classes continue to refine skills through a range of musical styles. Appreciating music is also about learning other cultures – our young musicians recognize the interplay of cultures across time in how music is made and shared.

Musical performance & competition
Elementary musical performances are hosted during the school day and open class families. Middle and high school afterschool performances are open to the KIS community.
Middle and high school singers and musicians may compete in selective regional showcases, including as composers and conductors, at conferences hosted by:
- AMIS | Association for Music in International Schools
- KIMEA | Korea International Music Educators Association
- Korean American Interscholastic Activities Conference

Visual arts
Our visual arts program shows the power of expression + craft. Before we write, we draw. Before we know much about composition, we sculpt dough and glue collages on construction paper. Our visual arts classes give all artists the tools and techniques to create amazing 2D and 3D art with the understanding that the process is as important as the finished piece. We challenge students to use their skills to visually communicate their stories. And we provide practical ways for artists to share their work or collaborate within the school community:
- Semester art shows centered on a theme
- KIS school calendar illustrations
- Club, activity, or performance illustrations and graphic design

Theater
Any middle or high schooler can join a KIS theater production and find their place. While drama and stagecraft classes support our fall and spring shows, we invite all interested students to participate as cast or crew – with the chance to try different roles as set designers, sound and lighting techs, choreographers, front of house marketers, backstage crews, actors, singers, and dancers. We believe theater uniquely cultivates important skills like courage, risk-taking and resilience, confidence, public speaking, and adaptability. The supportive, talented theater community at KIS has fun through it all! Recent productions include:
- Matilda Jr. | musical
- The AI Play
- Elf | musical
