Learning through play & inquiry

Learning through play & inquiry

This story is part of a series showing the culture of continuous learning at KIS.

Our early childhood education (ECE) program follows the Reggio Emilia philosophy of student centered learning through exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Teachers integrate art, design, language, math literacy, and science into learning. We want the earliest experience of school to be positive.

The learning environment invites curiosity. Classroom spaces evolve with current learning – rearranging furniture, providing different materials to play with, and changing images on walls prompts new questions and ideas. And at KIS, one of our favorite learning environments is the forest. ECE classes hike up the hill or down to the Eco Hot Spot each week to play, wonder, and learn in nature.

We can all learn to pursue wonder and curiosity from our pre- and junior kindergarteners. The video below shows the everyday ECE experience.
