Admissions Steps

Step 1: Review Criteria

Who is eligible to attend an international school in Korea?

  • A student having one or more parents holding a nationality that is not South Korean as verified by an alien registration card and Korean family registry.
  • A student who has lived overseas for no less than 3 years (1,095 days) as verified by the “Entry and Exit Certificate” issued by the Korean immigration department.
  • A student currently enrolled at an accredited international school in Korea.
  • A student with 6 semesters of official report cards and a letter of attendance from an overseas school. Note: 6 semesters status applies only to Elementary year Grade 1 and above.

    • If your child has dual citizenship, please submit a certificate of entry and exit for each passport.

    • Copy of valid Alien Registration Card
    • Official certificate of entry and exit
  • International School Transfer
    • Letter of attendance from current international school stating date of initial enrollment.
    • Eligibility requirement that was met at the time of applicant's admission to current school.
  • Six (6) Semesters Overseas
    • Official report cards/transcripts showing completion of six (6) semesters from school(s) abroad.
    • Official letter of attendance from school(s) abroad.
    • Official certificate of entry and exit (applicant and parents).

Transcripts or Report Cards
The documents should be written in English or translated into English with notarization and sent directly to KIS in a sealed envelope.

  • PK - K: Please provide all available school documents.
  • G1 - G8: Please provide report cards for current and previous two (2) years.
  • G9 - G12: Official transcripts/report cards for current and previous two (2) years.

Confidential Recommendations
Please request that your child's teacher complete our Letter of Recommendation Form. The form should be submitted directly to KIS from the teacher.

  • PK - G5: Homeroom Teacher
  • G6 - G12: English and Math Teacher

Standardized Test
If available, please submit a copy of your child's standardized test result(s).

Step 5: Register for an Admissions Exam

Schedule and Sit the Admissions Exam & Interview
At this point, all required documents should have been submitted. Only students who have submitted all required documents will be contacted for testing/interview scheduling via parent’s email. If you are not contacted to schedule testing, please refer to Step 3 to determine if any documents are missing. 

Please note that document processing takes approximately 3-4 business days.

The entire evaluation process typically take between 5-10 business days after the Admissions Exam & Interview. Application results will be communicated via email.

Application Process

When is the deadline for application?
KIS has rolling admissions. Elementary and Middle School students can enroll throughout the school year. High School students are recommended to start at the beginning of the school year or beginning of the second semester in January. It is recommended that applicants have all eligibility documentation and testing completed at least one month before the anticipated first day of school.

Admissions Testing / Interviews

Is the admissions test conducted at KIS or can it be done remotely?
Most students will take the admissions test at KIS. In some cases a remote interview and writing test can be granted to students who are in the top 10% of their class. Official standardized test scores must be submitted to be considered for a remote test.

If my child takes the admissions test but does not pass, may we apply to KIS again?
Yes. Students are welcome to apply to KIS again after 6 months. Updated report cards and recommendation letters must be submitted to be eligible to test again.

Academics

Does KIS have an ESOL program?
At KIS, the program for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is available for students who require English language support. This program is based on availability, but other additional academic supports are available as well.

Is KIS an accredited educational institution?
KIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Also, KIS Pangyo is recognized by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education as a foreign school.

What are your average class sizes?
There are approximately 16 students per class.

Do you offer additional languages?
French, Spanish, and Mandarin are available in the Elementary, Middle, and High School. Korean is part of the regular curriculum in the Elementary School program.

Student Life

What are your school start and end dates?
KIS keeps an American academic calendar with the school year beginning mid-August and finishing in mid-June. Please click here to view and download our 2019-20 School Year Calendar.

What are your school hours?
School begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. for all students. Parents with children in pre-kindergarten or junior kindergarten can choose between two start options: 8:00 am ~ 3:00 pm or 9:00 am ~ 3:00 pm.

Do you offer after-school clubs and sports?
KIS offers a wide range of activities and sports after school that varies throughout the year. Elementary School clubs begin at 3:15 and finish at 4:15. Middle and High School activities begin at 3:15 and finish at 5:00.

What type of bus transportation services are offered to students?
KIS offers bus to and from school. Parents can choose round trip or one-way routes. Bus service is also provided for after-school activities. You can find more information in our busing.

Do you have a uniform?
KIS requires a uniform only for PE class. Otherwise, the dress code is casual.
